2/28/2022 (Permalink)

Is Storm Damage Covered by Insurance?

Storm damage may be covered by your insurance policy, but you’ll need to reach out to your agent to get specifics about your particular coverage. It’s important to note that your home must be maintained to a reasonable standard. Otherwise, it could be hard to prove that the storm was the cause of the damage versus a lack of proper maintenance and general wear and tear.

Who Do I Call After A Storm?

SERVPRO provides many of the services you may need after a storm blows through your area. We provide emergency roof tarping and board-up services to help prevent additional damage from the elements and provide security to your property. How Long Does it Take to Fix Flood Damage?

The time it takes to fix flood damage depends on the severity of the flood. We’ll inspect your home or business and discuss with you the severity of damage and our plan to help return your property back to preloss condition. We’ll then work to remove the water that shouldn’t be there using pumps and water extracting equipment. Once the excess water is gone, we use dehumidifiers and other specialized drying equipment to help return the area to its normal moisture level. Steps in Water Damage Preparation

2/15/2022 (Permalink)

Emergency Contact

When you call, our specialist will guide you through several questions that will help us appropriately respond to your unique water emergency. Beyond understanding your situation, we will want to set up a time for your local SERVPRO professional to inspect the property and create a restoration plan for you. Fast response is critical, so we’ll want to schedule this as soon as possible.

Inspection and Water Damage Assessment

After our professionals arrive at your home, they will thoroughly assess the water damage and help you understand its severity, hazards that may be present, and determine what can be restored. If necessary, we will also assist with stopping the source of the water damage. All of this is a crucial step to creating an effective plan of action that will result in the successful restoration of your property.

Water Removal

Service work normally begins with a thorough extraction of water. This helps prevent the spread of water in the structure and reduces drying time. Typically, hundreds or thousands of gallons of water are removed using powerful pumps and extraction units during the water removal process.

Damaged Material Removal

If any materials cannot be successfully restored, this will be communicated to you. These materials are typically removed as soon as possible to expedite the drying of all restorable materials.

Cleaning, Sanitizing, and Deodorization

Water damage can create cleaning, sanitizing, or deodorization needs for floors, furniture, and other personal belongings. SERVPRO professionals use a variety of specially formulated products, industry-leading equipment, and proven techniques to accomplish this important aspect of restoration.

Drying

After the bulk of the water has been removed, our specialists use industry-leading drying equipment to remove the water you can’t see. This will target water within materials to bring these materials back to their normal moisture level. This equipment is normally placed during the first visit to your property. The type and amount of equipment is based on your unique situation and industry standards.

Monitoring

During the drying process, our specialists will want to visit your property daily to help ensure materials are drying properly, check drying equipment performance, and make changes as needed. This monitoring process is critical to effective and efficient drying of your property.

Repairs and Construction

After these initial steps, your home may need construction work to get your property back to its preloss condition. The repair step can be minor repairs or rebuilding entire areas of your home. We can simplify the restoration process by handling both the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding the affected areas. Having one qualified company for the entire process can save time and keeps costs low.

Winter Wind Damage

2/4/2022 (Permalink)

Mid-Michigan has had allot of heavy winds lately, putting allot of pressure on the exterior of your home.  Wind can leave your roof exposed and that is especially dangerous when entering the cold winter months. Snow and ice can build up over time and cause further breakdown of the exposed area. When fall comes around and everything outside thaws, the water will begin to slowly leak inside. Water works very quickly and can make its way down the drywall and into the flooring before being detected. When water has a chance to sit mold begins to grow. At this point everything must be removed, cleaned, and replaced. Always inspect the exterior of your home after any type of storm and if you are in need or repairs, call SERVPRO of Lapeer 24/7, 365 days a year!

Generator Safety

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

With the high winds and constant snow fall it is so important to know how to properly own and operate a generator for your home.

- The first and most important thing to remember when using a generator is to keep it out of your home! Generators should never be used in your garage or basement and should be kept 20 feet away from your doors and windows. The exhaust from a generator contains a high amount of carbon monoxide, a poisonous and odorless gas that can kill a person in a matter of minutes.

- Second, keep your generator dry. Operate it on a dry surface that provides coverage and do not touch your generator with wet hands.

- Third, plug appliances directly into the generator or make sure that you are using heavy duty extension cords that have no visible tears or loose wiring.

Fireplace Safety

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

Now that the cold weather seems to be hear to stay... We would like to ask.......

Are you using your fireplace safely and correctly?

-If possible, keep a window slightly cracked while the fire is burning.

-Is your damper/flue open? Keeping it open will drawl the smoke outside out of the house. You can easily check by looking into the chimney with a flashlight.

-Use dry, older wood. Wet or green wood causes allot of smoke and soot buildup in the chimney. Dry wood burns more evenly.

-Smaller pieces of wood gathered together burn faster, producing less smoke.

-Are you getting annual chimney inspections by a professional? This is not only for cleaning but to ensure there are no blockages that prevent smoke from escaping.

-The layer of ash in the bottom of your fireplace should never stand more than 1” tall. A thick layer restricts air supply.

-Safety screens are a must if you have small children. They prevent curious hands from being burnt on hot glass.

-Keep the area around your fireplace clear of anything flammable.

-Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and routinely check the battery.

-Always know where your fire extinguisher is located in case of emergency

-Frequently speak with your kids about fireplace safety

Routine Exhaust Fan Maintenance

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

Bathroom exhaust fan fires are commonly caused by four different things.

  1. Faulty wiring
  2. Running the fan for extended periods of time
  3. Overheating the motor
  4. Failure to clean the fan

An exhaust fan fire can cause devastating damage. In the attached picture, you can see what a SERVPRO customer was left with after their fan caught fire. The fire department had to completely drown the bathroom and surrounding areas with water to put a stop to the flames, leaving the homeowner with extensive FIRE AND WATER damage.

To prevent this from happening in your home, follow these simple routine maintenance steps.

Get in the habit of inspecting and cleaning your bathroom fans regularly. Every six months to a year is recommended.

Exhaust fans should not run for long periods of time and should always be turned off before leaving the house. The recommended time to run the fan is between 15 and 20 minutes.

Critters in The Attic

12/30/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Lapeer responds to dozens of calls each year for home damage caused by a small critter. Raccoons, rats, and birds are all small animals that can set up camp on or even in your roof. This may seem like a small issue but in fact can lead to major issues.

These small animals can claw and chew there way through the layers of your roof until they eventually make there way through. This leads to massive roof underlayment damages followed by costly repairs. Once they are established, it is very difficult to keep them away permanently. An exterminator will need to come in and remove any scent of the animal and often that is just the beginning of the repair efforts needed.

Water Damage

If these animals do make it through the layers of your roof, water can seep through into your attic and make its way inside your home. That water can cause damage to your ceilings, walls, and floors.

Soffit Damage

Heavier animals can knock the soffit right off your home, giving them access to your attic.

If you find yourself in need of repairs after damage to your roof call SERVPRO of Lapeer today!

Winterizing Your Home

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Make sure your home is protected for the long winter ahead by paying attention to a few simple but important things.

-Cleaning your gutters and assessing your roof for any loose, cracked or bending shingles can save you from a leaky roof and major repairs in the middle of winter.

-Protect your deck by sweeping any fallen leaves and apply a fresh coat of sealant. Keep your outdoor furniture in good working condition by cleaning and storing it in a dry basement or garage.

- keep your heating bill down by sealing all doors and windows that have gaps.

- Most importantly, keep your pipes safe! Pipes are most likely to freeze in the areas of your house that heat does not reach, such as the garage or attic. Make sure these areas are well insulated and always keep your house above 55 degrees. Keeping the garage door shut at all times is also a major factor in protecting your pipes.

As always SERVPRO of Lapeer is available should disaster ever strike your home.

What Can be Saved vs Replaced with Smoke Damage?

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Fires can cause extensive damage to your home and personal effects. The heat radiating from the flames will radiate and cause items to melt or crack. After the flames have been delt with you are left with the devastating after math of smoke damage.

What Can Be Saved?

It all depends on the extent of the damage as well as the cost involved. Some items will cost more to salvage then to replace. A specially trained SERVPRO professional can assess and determine what items should be cleaned, discarded or replaced.

How Does Smoke Affect Your Home?

Smoke does not affect all materials the same. Also, just how hot the fire got and what it originated from will affect the outcome. The worst way smoke can cause damage is when it sneaks into small cracks. The particles are so fine so they often go undetected for a long period of time, leaving a smoke smell that can last for a very long time. You can remove the smell from your home only by removing or cleaning the affected items and clean your home with special formula cleaner.

How Do You Clean Smoke Damage?

First and foremost, the home needs to be properly ventilated. Next all debris needs to be removed and every surface area needs to be cleaned. The quicker this step is complete the more likely you are to reduce the possibility of cross-contamination.

Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are porous so smoke particles are often impossible to get out. The floor may have to be refinished or completely replaced.

Clothing

Commercial cleaning detergents should be enough to remove most, if not all of the smoke smell.

Signs of a Slow Leak

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

Does your home or business show signs of a leak?

  1. Musty Smell

Have you noticed an earthy or musty smell in your bathroom lately, even after giving it a good cleaning? Don’t ignore this crucial sign of a potential water leak. Keep looking for the hidden water leak, from inside your cabinets to behind your faucet, until you find the source.

  1. Mildew or Mold

Mold thrives in moist, dark areas. Pipes, which are typically hidden in a wall or under flooring, provide the perfect breeding ground.

  1. Damaged Paint or Wallpaper

If you see blistering paint or water stains on your walls, you could have a leak in the bathroom. Pay attention to the floorboards as well, when wet they tend to suck up the moisture and swell.

  1. Damaged Walls

Another sign of a hidden bathroom leak is wall damage. When drywall is exposed to moisture, it becomes soft and begins to bubble. Eventually, it will warp and break into pieces.

  1. Wetness in the Cabinet

Finding water or moisture in your cabinets is a sign of a hidden leak. It might be an easy fix, like tightening a nut, but it could also be a sign a valve needs replacing.

  1. Damaged Flooring

If your bathroom floor is buckling, cracking, or beginning to stain—and you didn’t let the bathtub overflow—odds are you have a leak. The water could be from a pipe directly underneath the floor, or it could have traveled there from another area.

  1. Rocking Toilet

A toilet shouldn’t wobble. If it starts to move when you sit down its likely the wax ring that keeps a water-tight seal between the base and the pipe below is worn. This will eventually lead to wastewater coming out under the toilet and an obviously foul smell.

  1. Faucet

If the bathroom faucet is loose in your hand, it can allow water to seep into the gaps. To fix the issue, it might be as easy as applying new caulking to make it water-tight again.

  1. Stains on Ceilings

If you have a bathroom on a second floor, check the patch of ceiling in the room directly beneath it for stains and signs of water damage. However, because water can travel a long distance, it's possible to find water stains on the ceiling further away.

Does your Lapeer County Home or Business Have a Mold Problem?

11/4/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial- Does your NW Genesee Home Have a Mold Problem

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

• Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

• Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

• Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.

• Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.

• Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

• Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Cell Phone Alerts

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

What are WEA cell phone alerts?

"Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages, usually less than 90 characters, that are sent directly to your phone by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier."

This alert system has been used more than 40,000 times to warn about incoming storms and local Amber Alerts.

The WEA system works by monitoring weather reports all over the country and cross referencing those reports with the cell phone towers that are located in the dangerous areas. The system then sends out a text message to anyone pinging off those towers.

With the help of SERVPRO of Lapeer, you can always restore or replace your home or business but you cannot replace your loved ones and your loved ones could never replace you. Keep your alerts on and active at all times.

Cant get someone out today?

Here is what you can do to minimize the damage..

Early cleanup after your basement floods is not only efficient but also important from a health standpoint. After you are certain the cause of the flood has been repaired you can start the cleanup.

Before you begin anything, be sure the situation is safe! With flooded basements sometimes comes sewage leaks, structural damage, or electrical hazards.

If you have a flood contained in a small area, you can use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the water.

Larger floods require the use of your sump pump. Connect a garden hose to the pump with the opposite end running away from your house and preferably into a storm drain. DO NOT remove all the water at one time. Remove about 1/3 of the water at the time, marking the level each time to confirm the leak has been cared for properly.

Why not remove the water all at once?

If the flooding in your basement is caused by heavy rain or snow fall, the water pressure in the ground is likely high. The water in your house may be stabilizing your foundation. Removing it all at once can lead to cracks in the foundation.

Again, removing the water will you wait for the professionals to come in will make dramatic difference in the amount of damage you have.

If you or someone you know has experienced basement flooding, do not wait! Give us a  call today.

What Happens when Water Gets Under your Ceramic Tile?

6/8/2021 (Permalink)

Tile can withstand small quantities of water but if your home has been flooded and you are thinking of leaving the effected tile untouched, there are a few important things you should know. Water that has found its way under ceramic tile can cause mold growth. If that mold is not taken care of it can become very dangerous. Mold spores can lead to health effects and will eventually compromise the structure of the tile itself.

This is where your insurance company steps in and tells you to call SERVPRO of Lapeer. Our trained professionals will come in, access all damage and identify potential future problems that you may not have even known to check for. Our Project Manager will work directly with you and your insurance adjuster to repair or replace all damaged areas.

With 24/7 on-call technicians, we are faster to any size disaster.

Fires in The Workplace

5/27/2021 (Permalink)

Fires in the workplace can be especially devastating to business owners. There is the damage to the facility, any inventory, and then there is the longer timeline before you can get back up and running which may lead to loss of employees. SERVPRO does not often receive calls for workplace fires, however the ones they do respond to, often have major damage with a loss of most or all their inventory. Take note of these 4 most common reasons for workplace fires.

Faulty Electrical Equipment

Loose wires, overloaded plugs and faulty connections can lead to dangerous electrical fires. This often happens because businesses put off replacing functional but unsafe or outdated equipment. It requires a slight investment to keep your staff safe and saves money in the end.

*Note- it is a business owners' responsibility to care for electrical equipment. These types are especially dangerous because they cannot be put out by water. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in site for all employees.

Flammable and Combustible Materials

Workshops and garages can be prone to these types of fires. If these items are not stored properly certain tools like a circular saw can cause a spark and light near bye flammable chemicals.

Lack of Staff Training

Unforeseen accidents are always a possibility even when you have followed all rules and regulations. For this reason, employee training is vital! Proper training can prevent innocent mistakes, like covering the vents of electrical equipment, that could lead to a major disaster. If a fire does still occur, it is extremely important that all staff members are aware of your evacuation plan.

Lack of resources and equipment in place

Smoke detectors and fire alarms need to be installed and checked! This should seem like a given, but unfortunately that is not always the case. Investing in the initial upfront cost of these safety procedures could save you thousands of dollars in the end and most importantly will KEEP YOUR STAFF SAFE!

If disaster should occur call

SERVPRO of Lapeer 24/7-365.

Types of Roof Damage

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

We have received a ton of calls for roof repairs after all of the high winds we have seen lately.

If your home has taken a beating from high winds, the damage is not always obvious. Damaged shingles may look fine from the street and the issues may not reveal themselves until after some time has passed.

Damaged shingles can lead to a leak in the roof. The leak will be small and hard to notice but may make its way through your homes siding or roofs waterproof material. These small areas allow moisture and pests to enter your home.

The wind can also cause the roof decking to lift away from the framing. Even the slightest lift can lead to loose screws and nails. If this happens it may take only one more high wind situation to completely lift the roof decking away from the home.

The damage your home sustains will depend on several factors. These include:

  • Direction of high winds
  • Type of home construction
  • Materials used for roof and siding
  • Age of home

When you have your home assessed for damaged by SERVPRO professionals, they will look beneath the surface to find the hidden damage.

Snow and Ice Build Up and The Damage it Can Cause to your Home

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

Winter is a beautiful and magical time of year. The snow fall makes for a picture perfect kind of day. But what happens if you leave all that snow on your roof and in your gutters to freeze?

Snow Damns- When snow falls on your roof and the temperature is above freezing, the snow melts and trickles down to a part of your roof that is colder and below freezing. The water then freezes and expands which can damage your shingles, open up cracks and create a snow damn. They may be beautiful to look at but they create an awfully expensive roof repair when not attended to properly.

Cave in's- if we have a bad snow storm, large amounts of snow can accumulate on your roof and if it is not removed in a timely manner, the weight of the snow could cause your roof to cave in.

SERVPRO of Lapeer are the experts in all things water. Call us any time-24/7- 365 days a year.

Roof Health

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

Living in Michigan your home is bound to see its share of wind, rain, snow and ice. Replacing or repairing a roof usually comes with an expensive price tag. Keeping an eye on a few simple things will help you maintain a healthy roof and keep you from spending a fortune.

Keep an eye on your shingles

Missing or damaged shingles are the cause of most major roof repairs because they are not attended to in time. Cleaning them on occasion to keep them free and clear of dirt, and replacing one or two missing shingles will help keep the integrity of your roof.

Roof Sealants

Replace your roof sealants once they show signs of wear or visible cracking.

Watch out for Rust

Rust spreads fast so if you have used any metal in the construction of your roof check it often. If rust does appear you should try to lightly brush it off.

Trim Branches

keep nearby branches trimmed and away from your roof in the case they fall over during a storm.

Think Before you Light your Candles

12/2/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know that December is the peak time of year for home fires started by candles? Each year an average of 7,900 home candle fires are reported!

Candles smell great and give you a nice cozy feeling, especially in the cold winter months, but it is important you pay attention to a few things.

Never leave your home while         a candle is burning. Before           walking away, make sure that      the flame has completely              burned out.

Never place a lit candle                 underneath a low shelf or             cabinet. make sure the candle       is placed somewhere free and       clear of anything that is                potentially flammable.

Never leave a child alone in a       room with a lit candle and             make sure that the candle is         up high enough so a child             cannot reach it and knock it           over.

SERVPRO of Lapeer is wishing you and your family a very safe and Merry Christmas this year.

Tips on how to SAFELY deep fry your turkey this Thanksgiving

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Turkey Fryer Best Practice Be sure to follow these tips to SAFELY deep fry your holiday bird!

Thanksgiving is a time for family and holiday traditions including taste tested Thanksgiving recipes. It's also a time where family members may want to join in the food preparation so fire safety is important. With the speed of deep-frying a turkey, the irresistible flavor, and juiciness that results, turkey frying has become a Thanksgiving tradition for some. But turkey fryers have the potential to cause fire and serious injury, which is why organizations like the National Fire Protection Association advises against using them. If you DO plan to deep-fry your holiday bird, be sure you know how to safely use the fryer, and take these precautions to protect yourself, your guests and your home.

Tips to help prevent deep fried turkey accidents

  • Keep outdoor fryers off decks, out of garages and a safe distance away from trees and other structures.
  • Make sure the turkey is thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups.
  • Watch the weather. Never operate a fryer outdoors in the rain or snow.
  • Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it's in use.
  • Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner.
  • Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds.
  • Never leave fryers unattended.
  • Purchase a fryer with temperature controls, and watch the oil temperature carefully. Cooking oil that is heated beyond its smoke point can catch fire. If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off.
  • Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
  • Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms and keep an "ABC" or grease-rated fire extinguisher close by. Do not to use water or a garden hose on a fire related to Turkey Fryers.
  • Skip the stuffing when frying turkey, and avoid water-based marinades.
  • Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
  • Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing.
  • Opt for an oil-less fryer. This uses infrared heat, rather than oil, to cook the turkey.

In the slim chance that something goes wrong (of course we HOPE not), please remember that SERVPRO of Lapeer always has crews on call, including holidays like Thanksgiving.  We are always here to help.  Give us a call at 810-664-1000 any time.

Overloaded Electrical Outlets

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

An overloaded outlet can get hot enough to burn through wires and start an electrical fire.

Signs of Overloaded Circuits

  • Humming or buzzing sounds
  • Smoke coming for the outlets
  • Dimming Lights
  • Burning Smells
  • Frequently flipped circuit breakers
  • Warm or discolored wall plates

Immediate Fixes

You will simply want to disconnect some of the plugs, find a different outlet to use and flip the breakers back on.

Long-Term Fix

Older homes are often not equipped with enough outlets to power all of your devices. You may want to add more outlets which is a great idea but it may overload your circuit breaker. You may have to install a new circuit controlled by a new breaker.

SERVPRO of Lapeer is equipped to handle any size fire at your residential or commercial residence.

Stages of Water Damage Repair for your Lapeer County Home or Business

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded Basement and Contents This basement experienced flooding after a bad rainstorm, and SERVPRO of Lapeer was on site to clean it up

If you experience water damage in your home or business, you will likely need to have water restoration done. What this entails can vary depending on the severity of the damage, but the general process remains the same. While your house is being worked on, you can expect a restoration company like SERVPRO of Lapeer to follow these fire restoration stages.

Inspection of the water damage

Before restoration can begin, the property will need to be inspected to understand the extent of the damage and how to address it. Our skilled production technicians and crew chiefs will look at each area of your home or business to determine the extent of the damage done by the water, whether it was from a storm or other flood in your building. This allows them to determine the best way to move forward with their work and create a water damage repair plan.

Mitigation against further damage

Once the inspection has been completed, SERVPRO technicians will move on to water mitigation. This step is essential to prevent the damage from getting worse. Unfortunately, many people miss this step and end up making matters worse by not preventing further damage from happening. For example, if there are holes in the walls from water seeping through or issues with the roofing or broken windows, these will need to be boarded up or covered with a tarp to keep the area safe and prevent further damage. Water damage will be removed as well, with each object treated based on what it’s made of. It will also include removing excess water and drying the building to prevent mold or mildew growth. Unpleasant odors will be removed as well. By identifying the odor's cause and determining the conditions where it contacts surfaces, the odor can often be removed over time without a trace, such as mold or mildew that has already started to grow.

Restoration of your home or business

After damage cleaning is complete, the final stage, the repair process, can begin. During the restoration, SERVPRO technicians will begin to return your home to its previous condition, endeavoring to make it "Like it never even happened." In the case of severe damage, this can include rebuilding walls, roofing, or even whole rooms. SERVPRO offers a variety of building services to address this. Smaller tasks, such as replacing carpets and repainting walls, will be done as well. All repairs will be covered with the home or business owner before starting. Once this stage has been finished, your house or business should look as good as it did before the water damage occurred!

Whether the water or flood damage was large or small, water damage restoration is a necessary part of returning your home or business to normal. A water damage remediation company like SERVPRO of Lapeer has the equipment and professional training necessary to do this quickly and thoroughly. We will be able to repair your home and can salvage many of your damaged belongings as well. If you’ve experienced any kind of water or flood damage, contact SERVPRO 24/7 at 810-664-1000

Three Tips to Avoid Freezing Pipes

11/18/2020 (Permalink)

Frozen Steps Don't get caught with frozen pipes this winter

A slow leak in a pipe in your home in Lapeer County, may go undetected for a while, but there's no mistaking the sudden and extensive damage a pipe that has frozen can cause. Here are some pipe freeze prevention tips to help keep your home safe from busted pipes and water damage during the winter.

3 Tips To Avoid Freezing Pipes and Water Damage

1. Prevention

The best way to avoid extensive water damage from frozen pipes is to prevent the issue from happening in the first place. There are a few places in your home where your pipes are the most vulnerable to freezing:

  • Right inside exterior walls
  • Connected to exterior faucets
  • Inside closed cabinets
  • In unheated areas such as attics and crawl spaces

There are several things you can do to prevent pipes from freezing. Insulate your pipes, particularly the ones that are near exterior walls or in spaces cut off from the central heating in your living spaces. You can apply electrical heating tape to pipes as well. Be sure to keep your heater on, even when you are not at home, if temperatures outside are below freezing. During the coldest parts of the day, it's a good idea to open your cabinet doors or allow your water faucets to drip for reliable pipe freeze prevention.

2. Detection

If you can catch a frozen pipe before it bursts, you may be able to save the pipe and the area around it from damage. A telltale sign that you have a frozen pipe is a significantly smaller flow when you turn on a faucet. Turn the faucet off, locate the pipe and slowly warm it up, allowing the ice inside to melt. The faucet should then flow normally again.

3. Solution

A burst pipe leads to water damage that can only be properly repaired by water mitigation experts. The technicians must tear out all ruined materials and rebuild the area affected by the flooding. If your insurance doesn't cover the cost, you may be looking at a lot of out-of-pocket expenses.

These pipe freeze prevention tips can protect your home from water damage. Make pipe protection part of your regular winter maintenance plan.  Should you find yourself in a wet and cold situation, SERVPRO of Lapeer is available 24/7/365 (yes, including holidays) to mitigate your water damage and get you back to normal.  Call us at 810-644-1000 anytime to get started.

Thanksgiving Fire Safety

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is a time to relax and celebrate with family, but we wanted to take a moment to remind everyone to exercise caution while preparing Thanksgiving dinner. Statistically, fire departments respond to more residential fire calls on Thanksgiving day than any other day of the year.

Every year, 2,100 residential structures catch fire on Thanksgiving, resulting in 10 deaths, 50 serious injuries, and $28 million dollars in damage. Here are some simple steps that you can take to avoid disaster on your day of relaxation and celebration:

  • Don’t leave food unattended while cooking
  • Check all smoke detectors before beginning Thanksgiving dinner preparation
  • Keep children and pets away from the kitchen
  • Keep the kitchen floors unobstructed to avoid tripping
  • Don’t use any electrical appliances that have damaged or severed cords (use this as an opportunity to treat yourself to some new kitchen toys!)
  • Avoid using deep fryers (even in the back yard, the NFPA discourages ALL use of fryers)

As always, our crews are on call 24/7 365 days of the year, should disaster strike. Please take note of the steps above to protect your home and your family! Relax, kick back, enjoy some football, and give thanks!

On this Thanksgiving, we feel especially thankful for all of YOU, our loyal clients!

Air Quality of your Business

10/21/2020 (Permalink)

After a long few months of working from home, businesses have been sitting dormant collecting dust and moving a lot less air through their systems. Now that everyone is headed back to the office and we are about to head into the cold winter months, have you taken the proper steps to ensure the health of your employees?

Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your business.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Everyone will be on high alert this year, wondering about every sneeze and cough. Do what you can to eliminate any contributing factors by calling SERVPRO of Lapeer and provide your employees with a safe and healthy work environment.

Fall Fire Safety

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

The cooler weather has arrived and with that comes warm cozy sweaters, the burning of all fall scented candles and the constant baking of every dessert that includes pumpkins or apples.

In the middle of all the warm fuzzy feelings, let's take a second to talk fall fire safety.

-Candles look and smell great but they are not always practical for families with younger children. Keeping them high up on a shelf or counter does not always guarantee safety. Kids love to climb, especially when they see that pretty orange flickering light. Battery operated candles are just as beautiful, last a lot longer and are a lot safer.

- Baking is a fall must and it is also a great skill to teach your kids. Just be sure to use proper kitchen safety. Keep the stove top clean from any grease or dust. Keep towels away from the stove top and make sure everything is completely turned off when you are finished.

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

14,000 US citizens have a water related issue in there home every day. Allot of these issues come from a home owners bathroom. Anything from a leaky or overflowing toilet, a crack in the pipes, or an overflowing sink from faulty valves, can leave a home owner with a major loss on there hands.

These simple suggestions could keep you from being a statistic.

  • Frequently test valves for your toilet, shower, and sink to ensure they are properly working.
  • Check faucet supply lines hidden under vanities and replace when needed.
  • If you notice a clog in your sink, call in a professional.
  • Keep an eye out for rust or brown colored stains in the drywall. This may be a sign that something is wrong with the hidden pipes.

What to Look for as Businesses Reopen

5/29/2020 (Permalink)

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the definition of clean and has 89% of consumers nervous about returning to the retail world.

SERVPRO cleaning specialist in Flint, recommends paying attention to four key things as businesses reopen.

1. Look for "signs" of clean

When you first walk into the building you should immediately look for signs that the space has been cleaned recently. A clean space will be free of visible dirt and trash. Fingerprints in high traffic areas are a good sign that cleaning is not high priority. Standalone sanitation stations are a good sign that disinfecting is a priority. Many businesses are also hanging signage to remind guests to use proper social distancing protocols.

2. What adjustments have staff made?

Everyone has a responsibility to stop the spread of coronavirus. The staff of retail businesses, restaurants, or community centers should be properly trained in CDC-approved cleaning methods. If employees are not using proper techniques or products, it might be due to a lack of proper training. Look for staff who are wearing gloves and masks and are practicing safe distancing when interacting with customers.

3. What adjustment has the business made to the physical space?

Many businesses and facilities have made physical changed to their buildings to help reduce the risk of spreading illness. The business may adjust to traffic flow of patrons to prevent congested areas. Contactless point-of-sale are becoming more common, and many businesses are constructing barriers between employees and guests. Some have even added markers on the floor to indicate the safe 6-feet distance. One good way to help prevent the spread of infection is to reduce the number of touch points, such as propping doors open and opening windows to increase airflow. Some of the businesses are going a step further and reducing the number of customers allowed inside the space at one time.

4. Does it look like " business as usual?"

in the same way that the country changed following 9/11, what we once knew as "normal" may change forever. If a facility is still operating gin the way it did before the coronavirus pandemic, there is a good chance the managers or staff are not taking the illness seriously and are not prioritizing the health of their employees and guests. many have reduced there hours of operation or offered times when they are open only for at-risk individuals, such as senior citizens or those who are immune-compromised. Before stepping out of your door, check the company's social media pages or their website for communications about their hours and the steps they are taking to protect patrons. These locations should be following federal, state, and local mandates with regard to safety.

Reopening America requires all of us to move forward together by practicing social distancing and other daily habits to help reduce the risk of exposure to the coronavirus.

SERVPRO specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it "Like it never even happened," for both commercial and residential customers.

Safety Measures Against the Coronavirus

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

About Coronavirus

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”) is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

Scope of Cleanup Protocol

SERVPRO professionals can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum. These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces as well:

• Kitchen/Food Areas

• Bathrooms

• Schools/Classrooms

• Offices

• Retail Spaces

• Water Fountains

• Shelving and Racks

• Sales Counters

• Carpets and rugs

• Stair Handrails

• Elevator Cars

• Playground Equipment

• Fitness Equipment

Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures

Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste. The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar type organisms to COVID-19. SERVPROXIDE, SERVPRO’s proprietary disinfectant, is a hospital-grade disinfectant that has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to SARS-CoV-2 on hard, non-porous surfaces. In addition, SERVPROXIDE currently has dozens of EPA-approved claims including Feline coronavirus, Canine coronavirus, Staphylococcus (MRSA), E. coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, Swine flu (H1N1) and more. Porous surfaces that are not water-sensitive, such as carpet and other fabric material, cannot be disinfected but can be sanitized using SERVPROXIDE.

Safe Snow Removal

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Snow on your roof can lead to leaks, mildew buildup in your attic, and damage to your gutters. It has  been a pretty mild winter so far but we at SERVPRO of Lapeer have a feeling it is not over just yet. Pay attention to the following three tips for safe snow removal.

1. Stay at ground level if possible. If it is wet you can assume it is slippery. Better to stay closer to the ground.

2. Dont let snow pile too high, remove as much as you can. Falling ice or a buildup of snow can be dangerous. The weight of the snow on your roof can also result in water leaks.

3. Use a plastic shovel. They are lightweight, flexible and easy to handle. Snow is also less likely to stick to a plastic blade.

Roof Damage and Repair

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

Roof damage is always a major concern when big rain or snow storms come through. Usually the signs are very evident. Water spots on the ceiling, curled shingles, wet walls or winter ice damage are are all very easy ways to determine if your roof is in need of a little TLC.

Missing shingles are always a sure tell sign but you should also pay close attention to any possible damage done to the remaining shingles.

Missing flashing at the edges of the roof, vents and chimneys should also be attended too in order to prevent unwanted water from entering your home during the next storm.

pealing sealant can also cause problems so be sure to look for that as well.

SERVPRO of Lapeer is on call 24/7. We can restore or replace any issues with your roof.

Do not hesitate to give us a call today....

What is a sump pump? What happens when it fails you?

1/12/2020 (Permalink)

Hundreds of Michigan residents are finding out just how important it is to have a battery back up for your sump pump in the case of a power outage. After the severe weather we experienced this weekend many basements have been left with standing water.

A sump pump eliminates moisture and prevents flooding by collecting excess water from drains and pumping it out and away from the building. You will find a sump pump sitting in a specially constructed pit that sits lower than the basement floor in homes that are susceptible to major rain and snow fall.

If your pump stops working, water could get into your basement and foundation walls. This may cause mold and mildew to grow and if enough water builds up, the basement can flood.

How do you know your sump pump is working?

You can check your sump pump tow different ways. Two separate plugs are attached to the unit. Unplug them both and then plug in only the one for the pump. If the pump does not immediately turn on then something is wrong. Your other option is to add water and wait to see if the pump turns on and properly evacuates the water.

Family Escape Plan

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Do you have an escape plan if a fire happens at your home?

Consider these tips to create a plan:

  • Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Households with children should consider drawing a floor plan, showing 2 exits of each room (door and window)
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home
  • Everyone in the household must understand the escape plan. When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  • If there are infants, elderly, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency.
  • Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Having an escape plan set in place- JUST IN CASE- can be life saving and beneficial.

If you have a fire at your home, call SERVPRO of Lapeer to take care of the disaster.

Keeping that Bedroom Door Shut

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Many children like sleeping with their doors open in fear of the boogeyman hiding under there bed. However this picture shows why it is so important for bedroom doors to stay shut at night time. A shut door can keep out smoke and eventually fire and save a life.

- Routine at home fire drills are a great way to keep your kids ready and aware. Kids practice them at school, why wouldn't you teach them at home?

Stop, Drop, and Roll is universal.  Also teach them to stay low, and how to check with the back of their hand to see if a door is warm.  Pick an easy place outside like the swing set for everyone to meet.

For more tips, check out this article from the National Fire Prevention Association on creating a home fire escape plan.

-Smoke alarms should be in every bedroom and properly maintained.

As always, our crews are on call 24/7 365 days of the year, should disaster strike.

Christmas Tree Hazards

12/4/2019 (Permalink)

Every year more and more families are moving away from the fake pre-lit Christmas trees and gravitating back towards the real thing.

Real trees are beautiful, but as with most beautiful things in life, they can be dangerous. Take a look at these guid lines to keep your family and home safe.

-When shopping for that perfect tree, look for vibrant green needles that do not break easily. If a tree is already easily shedding its needles than it is likely not a freshly cut tree and more susceptible to catch fire.

- Make sure that there is always water in the tree base to prevent the tree from drying out and make sure the tree is placed far away from any heat sources like candles or fire places.

-We all get tired at the end of the day and forget to do things but be sure to make unplugging your Christmas tree a part of your nightly routine.

-Lastly, pay attention to what Christmas lights you purchase. Any lights you use outdoors need to be labeled suitable for outdoor use.

Winterizing your Home

11/18/2019 (Permalink)

It has been the coldest November Michigan has seen in a very long time.

Refer to this article for more great tips and tricks to keep your home safe this winter.

As always SERVPRO of Lapeer is available should disaster ever strike your home.

How to Reduce Your Heating Bill With Winter

Keep Your Furnace System Clean

SERVPRO of Lapeer is not just a restoration company. We specialize in cleaning as well. If your furnace gets dirty it has to work extra hard, using extra power and possibly still performing less than a clean unit would. Our specialists can come out and properly clean your duct system and evaluate the dirt buildup on your blower blades. Excessive build up on your blades can severely decrease efficiency.

Check your Homes Insulation

Insulation in the walls of your attic actually play a big part in keeping your home warm. Allot of cool air can be trapped up there, causing the furnace to work double time to heat your house. Make sure that the vents in your attic are clear so air can easily flow where it is needed.

Before Turning on your Furnace

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

The ups and downs in temperature seem to be at an end, leaving us with only the cold days. Many families are thinking about or already have turned there furnace on. Below are a few things you should check for when you do.

Smell

You should consider having your duct system cleaned before turning the furnace on because dust will settle in your ducts during the warm months and inevitably burn off when the furnace is turned on, causing an odor. If the smell persists for more than a few days or if any smoke is coming from the ducts you should turn it off right away and call for assistance.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Carbon Monoxide is an odorless gas that can cause severe health issues and even lead to death. Be sure to have a carbon monoxide detector installed if you do not already have one. Pay close attention to it when turning on the furnace and if the alarm goes off or you get a reading that is over 30, turn the furnace off right away and call a technician. Some professionals suggest leaving your home until it is assessed if the alarm goes off or at the very least open any and all windows to air out the space.

Noises

Your furnace can tell you allot by how it sounds. Does it seem like it is working to hard to run by making new and intense noises? Is the furnace not blowing warm air? The first thing you should do is check your breaker to make sure the furnace is receiving power.

SERVPRO of Lapeer is dedicated to helping your family have a safe and happy fall season.

If you need help finding a technician or someone to clean your ducts give us a call anytime. If a more serious matter should arrive and you need a restoration team, we are ready for your call 7 days a week and 24 hours a day.

What you Should Know about Sewage Backup

10/4/2019 (Permalink)

When describing the damage and severity of a sewage back up, three categories are used

Category 2 or Gray Watermay contain bacteria and would cause illness or discomfort if digested.

Category 3 or Black Water is extremely unsanitary and can cause death or severe illness if ingested. This type of water comes from the toilet bowl with feces or water from beyond the toilet trap.

House Fire Causes and Prevention

10/3/2019 (Permalink)

The most common cause of a house fire is cooking equipment. You should never leave your stove unattended while cooking.

Did you know that smoking in a bedroom is the leading cause for fire related fatalities? Smoking outside of the home is the best way to insure your safety and the safety of your loved ones.

Children are naturally curious about everything and if given the opportunity they may light something on fire just to see what happens. It is important to keep lighters and matches out of reach. Dont leave fire education up to your children. Teach them the importance of fire safety, create a fire escape plan and always remember "stop, drop and roll."

Faulty wiring can cause electrical fires and lamp shades can easily over heat if they are tipped over or too close to the light bulb

BBQ's are a summer time favorite but make sure that your grill is never used inside the garage or too close to the outside of your home.

Fires can travel incredibly fast and are extremely dangerous.

Things to Look for After A Major Storm

9/30/2019 (Permalink)

Questions about a Basement Flood?

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your NW Genesee County basement could flood, including:

* A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe

* Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home

* Storm sewer backup

* Sanitary sewer backup

* Foundation drainage failure

* Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Fire Prevention in the Laundry Room

9/16/2019 (Permalink)

While kitchen fires are still the leading cause of house fires in the United States, an average of 42 families are affected by laundry room fires per day.

The most frustrating thing about these fires is that they could have easily been prevented with just a few simples rules to follow.

Always make sure that both your washer and dryer and plugged into an outlet with the correct amount of voltage and never use an extension cord to run your machines.

Your lint screen needs to be cleared out after every use and once a month it should be cleaned with warm soapy water (make sure it dries completely before putting it back into the dryer).

Be sure to keep the floor free and clear of any cleaning chemicals or other flammable items.

Installing a fire alarm in the laundry room or in the hallway outside of the laundry room can help keep your family safe incase anything was to happen.

Your Basement Flooded- What Now?

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

Few things are more stressful and disgusting than basement flooding. Whether it’s one inch or one foot of water, the effects can be detrimental to your home. And while damage to things like carpet, drywall, and furniture are immediately noticeable, something more serious could be lurking underneath your floors.

Five Things to Do After Basement Flooding

Whether it’s just a couple of inches of water or a few feet, you must respond quickly to basement flooding. Here are a few things you’ll need to do:

  1. Kill the Power

If there’s standing water in your basement, then you shouldn’t attempt to walk or wade through until you’ve shut off the power and made sure that open circuits aren’t covered by water. This can obviously be an electrocution hazard and isn’t something you want to mess with.

If you’re unsure of whether the electricity is cut off, can’t get to the circuit board, or simply don’t feel comfortable with the situation, then don’t attempt to go anywhere near the water.

  1. Get Rid of the Standing Water

The next order of business is to get rid of the water. The longer the water sits in your basement, the more damage it will cause. Make sure you put on a pair of sturdy shoes or boots and pants that cover your legs. You never know what’s lurking underneath the water and don’t want to risk hurting yourself.

If the standing water is high, your first step is to get a bucket and start manually removing the water (be sure to dump far away from the home’s foundation). Once you extract most of the water, you can use a wet vacuum to suck up the moisture from the floor.

  1. Call in the Professionals - Like SERVPRO of Lapeer

Once the standing water is removed, you should call in the professionals to take a look. Depending on the extent of the damage and how meticulous you want to be, this may include calls to an electrician, a flood cleanup crew, and a general contractor.  Fortunately, a single call to our office at 810-644-1000 can handle all of those repairs

Any carpeting or absorbent materials that were affected will need to be ripped up or replaced. If appliances spent any time sitting in the water, they should be looked at by a professional before being used.

  1. Call Your Insurance Provider

Once all of the time-sensitive issues have been handled, take a few minutes to call your insurance provider to let them know about the problem. If the flooding happened as a result of one of your home’s plumbing systems, then your home insurance policy may cover some or all of the damage. However, if the flooding was the result of a natural disaster, then you’ll most likely need flood insurance. Regardless, place a couple of phone calls to see what can be done.

  1. Protect Your Home

As soon as everything gets repaired and restored, you should begin taking proactive steps to protect your home from similar issues in the future. The ground next to your basement and foundation should slope away from the home. Gutters and downspouts should slope away too while discharging water a minimum of five feet away from the home. All windows and vents should be sealed and your basement walls should be waterproofed with an appropriate product. If flooding is common, consider installing special French drains or even a sump-pump.

How Do They Get All of This Water Out of My Home?

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Lapeer has highly trained professionals who have a precise plan of action when your home is affected by water.

First they organize a move-out/pack-out to protect all of your belongings.

Next the water removal begins immediately.

So how do they get all of that water out of there?

Depending on how much water you have, SERVPRO may use power submersible pumps along with industrial strength, wet/dry vacuums. This reduces drying time and helps to prevent mold.

The flooring needs to be inspected to determine if removal will be necessary in order to protect the subfloor.

Moisture detectors are then used to measure the extent of water and inferred cameras are used to find water that may be hidden behind the walls.

After this the dry out process can begin and you can begin and you will be one step closer to getting your home back!

Call SERVPRO of Lapeer any time you have a water problem and let one of our experts get you back into your home faster.

Holiday Depot Support

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

All of the collected items on the table after counting.

Community is very important to us at SERVPRO. We strive to be active members of the community and support those in need when we can. That is why we did not even think twice about supporting the Holiday Depot of Lapeer County.

In order to show support for the organization, we became a donation center and a put gift tags on our tree for individuals looking for an item to buy. Considering we don’t get a lot of walking traffic, we decided to partner with the local elementary school to do a collection on their behalf. The school house over 400 students. We put a collection box in 19 classrooms and asked the students to bring items in over the course of 3 weeks. Any class that participated would receive candy canes and the class that brought in the most items would receive a pizza party. We were a little weary because this was the first attempt at something like this, but much to our surprise, the winning class brought in 211 items and the students, brought in 1,146 items! Those items will go a long way for this organization and the families in the community that need the assistance.

Overall, this was an amazing experience and we are so humbled by the support that the students showed for those in need in our community. We can’t wait to do this again next year!

Donation to the Fire Association

1/1/2019 (Permalink)

The van after the training session was complete.

Have you heard of spring cleaning? At SERVPRO, we believe in fall cleaning! In this case, we had some vehicles that didn’t work and we needed to find them a new home. Instead of just shipping them off to the junk yard, we decided to donate them to the local fire association for their training session.

This training session was teaching them how to remove people from the vehicles, more specifically, using the jaws of life. We were unable to attend the course due to state regulations, but from the pictures that they sent us, that class was very interesting. The two mini vans that we donated, are now doorless convertibles! We were impressed when we saw the after pictures.

The training the members of our fire department does, it crucial to the work that they do in the field and we are happy that we were able to assist them by donating our vehicles.

Continuing Education

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

Photo of the class attendees during a class break.

One of the many ways that SERVPRO helps in the community, is by providing Continuing Education Classes. These classes assist insurance agents in receiving the credits that they need for their certification throughout the year.

This past June, we hosted our first class at the Flint Farmers Market with approximately 30 insurance agents in attendance. Mary, from SERVPRO Corporate visited and taught them about Ethics & Fire Restoration. The afternoon session was complete with a demonstration of SERVPRO products on wood with various levels of smoke damage. We even included a question and answer section with Eric, who holds a masters in fire & water restoration and has over 20 years of industry experience. Overall, the agents enjoyed the classes and thought that they were interesting, specifically the Fire Restoration class.

SERVPRO Summer Send-off

12/17/2018 (Permalink)

Volunteers working the check-in table for the event.

Part of our culture is having fun and bring people together. We also like to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. That is why we partnered with a neighboring SERVPRO to bring the community together for a SERVPRO Summer Send-off Party! This event was the largest after-hours event to date and the first tri-county event. This was a night that attendees will remember.

We had it all! We had a battle of the breweries, food trucks, live music, lawn games and the option to support a local nonprofit. Guests could hang out inside the warehouse or take the party outside under the tent. While some played the lawn games, many chose to take the opportunity to network with other attendees. Periodically throughout the night, we would count the brewery votes and at the end of the night, we announced Tenacity Brewing as our winner!

This event was enjoyed by all that attended, and we can’t wait to start planning for next year!

Crawl Space Pool?

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

The basement that flooded as a result of the water in the crawl space.

Crawl spaces are typically small and difficult to maneuver through; however, there are those times when it can’t be avoided.

At a resident’s home in Grand Blanc, water was coming from the crawl space into the basement. The carpet was soaked, but the homeowner did not know where the water was coming from within the crawl space. A plumber came out and fixed the source, but our work was only just beginning. Our crew started by removing the carpet from the affected area. Once the carpet was removed, the equipment was ready to be set to start the drying process; however, the circuits kept popping. We learned that we were attempting to plug in more than the house could handle in that specific area. So, we regrouped and came back the next day to monitor and swap out some of the previously set equipment with some Ariel fans. This helped with the power restraint, while maintaining drying power within the affected area. After a few short days, the homeowner was able to take back their home, knowing that there was no water where it should not be!

Double Header

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

This one’s a true double header! We were called out to a home in Oxford for a shower/bath that was leaking into the basement AND mold in the basement that needed to be remediated.

To start, we addressed the water issues that the customer faced, conducting demo and setting equipment to start the drying process. Next, we addressed the mold in their basement. Our crew set-up a containment zone, remediated the mold and then place 3 air scrubbers in the affected area. After a couple of days, the water affected area was dry and the affected mold area was good to go. This job is now in reconstruction and soon their home will look like the shower/bath never leaked and the mold was never even there.

That Sinks!

8/17/2018 (Permalink)

The basement under the sink where the supply line had broke.

Those darn sinks sure can make an unexpected mess in a home! One moment it is just sitting there and the next, there is water everywhere! What do you do? Who do you call? This customer called us and now their home is as if it never even happened!

At this Flint home, the kitchen sink caused a mess! The supply line under the sink broke, cause water to go everywhere. Our crew showed up on site and immediately started extracting the standing water. From there, they started the demolition process. The kitchen floor, base boards, sub floor, insulation under the sub floor in the basement and vanities were all removed. The equipment was set and we began the next stage of water losses, monitoring. Each day a member of our crew returned to the house to ensure that it was drying properly. After a couple of days, they home was dry, and reconstruction was able to come in and put their home back to normal.

Disinfecting Clean: Biohazard Job

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

A few weeks ago, we received a call from a company in need of a disinfecting clean. A physical Therapy Company recently learned that one of their patients was diagnosed with C-diff Colitis, a highly contagious bacterial infection that typically resides in the colon. Their facility was shut down directly after receiving the news. We received the call shortly after 4:00 PM and started mobilizing our staff. This was an all hands-on deck situation, as the business needed to reopen the next day. Our staff quickly packed their vehicles, grabbed the proper Personal Protection Equipment and hit the road.

Upon arrival, the crew visited the neighboring store to get the key to the building. Given the nature of the job, prior to entering the building, our crew needed to put on a full Tyvek suit and full-face respirator to ensure that they could safely clean the facility. Our crew knocked that cleaning job out in just 2 hours and the company was able to reopen the next day with their mind at ease.

Washing Machine Floods House

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

This is the laundry room after the floor was removed and the air movers were set.

We have all hoped that our washing machine will never turn against us and clean nothing more than the items that we put inside it; however, sometimes that is not case.

We recently completed a water loss in Grand Blanc where the hose for the washing machine broke, leading to water overflow. When we arrived on site, we learned that multiple levels were affected. Ben and Tracy and immediately started a hard surface extraction to remove the water from the flooring. It was after that process was completed that they noticed the vinyl flooring was starting to bubble and was reading 99% wet on the moisture reader. They are removed the flooring, set equipment and took the next couple days to monitor. Now the customer’s home is as if it never even happened.

Betrayed by the Ceiling

8/15/2018 (Permalink)

The exposed pipe that caused the damage.

The fourth of July is meant to be a day of celebration and remembrance of the journey that our country has taken to be where we are today. Unfortunately for one family, this year was not as joyous as years past.

Our on-call staff received a call the morning of the fourth. A home in Davison experienced a leak in their ceiling, from a plumbing issue in their upstairs bathroom. It was causing water damaging is various locations throughout the house. Ben and Josh were the first of our staff to arrive on-site and start the demo process. The house was carpeted, which means all of it, including the padding needed to be removed and disposed of prior to setting the drying equipment. In addition to the demoing the carpet, the crew also removed 18 square feet of drywall in the ceiling. Once demo was complete, we placed air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the affected areas to start the drying process. After a couple days of monitoring, the homeowner was able to reclaim their home with peace of mind.

Moldy Attic

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Side by side comparison of the attic ceiling.

This attic is 1,983 square feet. When we first arrived on site it was completely covered in mold. The inspector identified the source as an improper ventilation issue. Understandably so, the homeowner was unable to fix the source until the mold was remediated. They called our office and Eric went out to give them an estimate. Soon after the estimate was accepted by the homeowner, our techs, Austin and Josh were onsite in full Tyvek suits setting up the containment and starting the remediation process. In the first day we were able to set-up the containment, remediate and set the air scrubbers. Upon the final walk through with the homeowner, the attic was clear of mold and ready to start fixing the source of the problem.

Massive Warehouse Cleaning

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen in the office section after our staff finished cleaning it.

A few weeks ago, our team completed a 75,000 square foot general cleaning job. The current owner of the building was looking to sell but was unable to do so due to the amount of black carbon dust in the building. It seemed to cover every inch of the building. It didn’t seem to matter if you were in the main office or out in the warehouse, the thickness of the dust remained the same.

In the warehouse portion of the building, we had to rent a Zamboni to clean the floor due to the dust and the surface area being covered. To see a difference in the flooring, we had to clean the floor 2-3 times. Thank goodness for the Zamboni! On the other side of the warehouse, there were 30+ racks that needed to be wiped down and the floor cleaned under. It took us several days to complete these tasks, but the warehouse looks amazing!

On the inside of the building, the carpets were covered in dirt and dust. Due to foot traffic, it was all stomped into the ground. The walls, lights and walls were all covered in carbon dust and needed to be cleaned prior to the floors being done. The bathrooms were destroyed and blackened with carbon dust, more so than any other room in the building. The kitchen was neglected, and every inch of the cupboards and appliances needed to be cleaned. Using SERVPRO cleaning products and a lot of arm muscle, the office portion is now sparkling!

In the end, we were able to clean this warehouse in just over 2 weeks. The owner will hopefully have no problems selling with warehouse and the new owners will be able to move in with confidence!

Teacher Appreciation Week

5/16/2018 (Permalink)

Over the course of last week, we took time to acknowledge teachers. We asked individuals from Facebook to share a story about a teacher that either positively impacted themselves or someone that they knew. Those teachers being nominated would be entered a drawing for a basket of classroom supplies.

After the first day, we had only received one nomination, but by day two it started to pick-up. By the end of the week, we had received 16 nominations from schools in Lapeer, Davison, Linden, Swartz Creek, Flushing and Lansing. The stories that were shared with us were truly heart warming and we would like to share some of them with you!

Mrs. Furneaux

“She took a job at River Rouge High School in Detroit. In her first week on the job, she came home crying every day. She had planned on quitting that Friday because the kids were rude, bullies and dangerous. One day she lost control and cried in front of the students and a student walked up to her and said, “Mrs. Furneaux, you’re not going to quit on us too, are you?” A year later she was still working there.”

Michael

Mrs. King

“I had 7 children and she was a teacher for 4 of them. Mrs. King was amazing and always got down on their level and make them feel special, like they could accomplish anything. The last of my 7 kids are seniors this year and after all these years she still asks about my kids. She is an amazing teacher, the greatest friend and a superb human being. We love you Mrs. King!”

Heidi

Mr. Starr

“Garth Starr is always being supportive and making me believe in myself. I truly enjoyed coming to his class each day and always left with a smile.”

Sump Pump Failure leads to Flooding Issues

5/7/2018 (Permalink)

The Utility room was continuously flooding throughout the day, until we arrived.

On April 19th, we received a water loss at a commercial site in the Goodrich area. What we thought was a standard category 1 water loss, was actually a category 3. Over the weekend, they lost power in an ice storm and their sump pump failed, causing the toilets to overflow and flood the building. The employees attempted to clean the water up themselves, but quickly learned that it was a much bigger job than they were equipped to handle on their own and called us.

Upon our Production Manager, Darren arriving on site and conducting our initial surveillance, we learned that there was little to no moisture in the walls. The flooring was not so lucky. After conducting several moisture reading tests throughout the effected areas, we learned that all of the flooring, approximately 500 sqft, will have to be removed.

Later that day, our crew arrived on site to start demoing the effected area. This demo included: The main hallway, 7 rooms and 4 bathrooms. All flooring was removed, and two feet of drywall and insulation from the floor up. Air movers were strategically placed to produce the most desirable air flow and the most efficient drying process. Furthermore, dehumidifiers were used to assist the air movers in their task.

In the end, we have another happy customer and a commercial property that is back up and running as if it “Never even happened.”

Standing Up for Child Abuse Prevention & Autism

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

We decorated our front yard with blue and silver pinwheels to show our support.

Throughout the month of April, SERVPRO of Lapeer has been actively participating in Child Abuse Prevention and Autism Awareness month.

The month started with us simply decorating the lawn with the blue and silver pinwheels and each staff member wearing a blue ribbon in support of the causes. As the month went on, we quickly started to become more involved. Here is a list of our involvements:

  • Justice for Lily Foundation’s Lily Ball Sponsor
    • Table Sponsor
      • Though many of our team members are on committees for this event, we purchased a sponsorship to allow our entire office the opportunity to attend the event.
    • Weekly Meeting Host
      • We have donated a portion of warehouse space to the Justice for Lily committee to assemble center pieces and auction baskets for the event.
    • Community Supply Drive
      • Promoted and dedicated a portion of our office to supplies being collected for the Child Advocacy Center of Lapeer County and the Forever Friends Network in Lapeer.

We are saddened that this month has come to a close; however, we are proud of the support that we were able to give to those organizations and individuals in our community that are the boots on the ground. Thank you to everyone that joined us in showing their support and a BIG thank you to those individuals who are the boots on the ground.

Checking Your Home: Structural Elements

2/3/2017 (Permalink)

Checking Your Home: Structural Elements

If you had to leave your home, return only when local authorities advise that it is safe to do so. Do not cut or walk past colored tape that was placed over doors or windows to mark damaged areas unless you have been told that it is safe to do so. If a building inspector has placed a color-coded sign on the home, do not enter it until you get more information, advice and instructions from your local authorities.

If you have children, leave them with a relative or friend while you conduct your first inspection of your home after the disaster. The site may be unsafe for children, and seeing the damage firsthand may upset them even more and cause long-term effects, including nightmares.

Make a careful and thorough inspection of your home’s structural elements:

  • Check the outside of your home before you enter. Look for loose power lines, broken or damaged gas lines, foundation cracks, missing support beams or other damage. Damage on the outside can indicate a serious problem inside. Ask a building inspector or contractor to check the structure before you enter.
  • If the door is jammed, don’t force it open – it may be providing support to the rest of your home. Find another way to get inside.
  • Sniff for gas. If you detect natural or propane gas, or hear a hissing noise, leave the property immediately and get far away from it. Call the fire department after you reach safety.
  • If you have a propane tank system, turn off all valves and contact a propane supplier to check the system out before you use it again.
  • Beware of animals, such as rodents, snakes, spiders and insects, that may have entered your home. As you inspect your home, tap loudly and often on the floor with a stick to give notice that you are there.
  • Damaged objects, such as furniture or stairs, may be unstable. Be very cautious when moving near them. Avoid holding, pushing or leaning against damaged building parts.
  • Is your ceiling sagging? That means it got wet – which makes it heavy and dangerous. It will have to be replaced, so you can try to knock it down. Be careful: wear eye protection and a hard hat, use a long stick, and stand away from the damaged area. Poke holes in the ceiling starting from the outside of the bulge to let any water drain out slowly. Striking the center of the damaged area may cause the whole ceiling to collapse.
  • Is the floor sagging? It could collapse under your weight, so don’t walk there! Small sections that are sagging can be bridged by thick plywood panels or thick, strong boards that extend at least 8–12 inches on each side of the sagging area.
  • If the weather is dry, open windows and doors to ventilate and/or dry your home.
  • If power is out, use a flashlight. Do not use any open flame, including candles, to inspect for damage or serve as alternate lighting.
  • Make temporary repairs such as covering holes, bracing walls, and removing debris. Save all receipts.
  • Take photographs of the damage. You may need these to substantiate insurance claims later.

Does your home have a mold problem?

12/20/2016 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours. This shows spore growth less than 2 days after water exposure without proper mitigation.

These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Lapeer County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

12/19/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Lapeer and Grand Blanc will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Now that it has cooled off outside and people are spending significantly more time in their homes, we have been getting quite a number of calls for mold testing.  The number one reason people have been calling for testing is due to a "musty smell" in their home.  It doesn't take much for mold to form indoors; a small water leak or excess humidity could be cause enough for mold growth to begin.  Now, one must understand that mold is everywhere and is completely impossible to eradicate, however, mold does not tend to irritate us until it has had a chance to grow; causing it to produce allergens and irritants.

A water leak does not have to be present for mold growth to occur.  Please understand that an increase in humidity in the home can also create an environment susceptible to mold growth.  It is recommended that indoor humidity be kept below 45% in order to prevent the growth of mold.  This can be difficult in older homes that utilize water or steam heat as these tend to increase the humidity level indoors.  If this is the case for you, it may be to your benefit to place dehumidifiers strategically throughout your home where humidity levels tend to be the highest.  An indoor humidity meter can be picked up for just a few bucks online if this is something that concerns you. I (Andrea) actually have a humidity meter on my alarm clock that allows me to monitor the humidity in my bedroom and I run a dehumidifier as needed.

If all else fails and you are concerned, please give us at SERVPRO of Lapeer & Grand Blanc a call.  We would be happy to come test your home for Mold in order to give you the peace of mind that you deserve.  Please know that if mold is found, our technicians come highly trained in Mold Remediation and have specialized Mold Remediation Equipment that allows us to effectively address the each unique mold issue our clients present.  If mold is identified and remediation must occur, rest assured that SERVPRO of Lapeer & Grand Blanc is ready to help.  The steps listed below illustrate our process for a “typical” mold remediation:

Our Carpet Cleaning Machine - Adam Hodges

Cleaning is at the heart of what we do at SERVPRO of Lapeer.  Whether it's a fire, water or mold job, the goal is to give a clean and fresh smelling house back to the home owner.  At a fire job, we do fire cleaning of all walls, ceilings, and floors as well as personal belongings, which removes all soot particles from any nooks and crannies of the house.  At a water job, we clean and remove damaged structure materials, so they will be mold free.  After every reconstruction and repair job, we provide a post construction cleaning of personal belongings as well as the house.  So you can see, at the end of every job, the last step of cleaning is usually a carpet cleaning.

Our technicians are very experienced and trained in carpet cleaning.  We provide different levels of carpet cleaning which can make the carpet look brand new again.  The highest level of carpet cleaning is called SHOW CASE CARPET CLEANING, where we scrub the carpet of any dirt. It gives the carpet a good shampoo.

We provide carpet cleaning as part of any remediation service, so at the end of all jobs, you can expect a clean and fresh house back, free of dirt.  We recommend you clean your carpet at least every half a year, so please call us today to schedule a cleaning of your carpet, HVAC, furniture, tiles and grout, upholstery, and just about anywhere else in your house.

Dryer Vent Cleaning

Dryer Vent Before and After Cleaning

Do you know that clogged up dryer vent can cause house fire?  According to the National Fire Protection Association, a common household dryer was the cause of more than 10,000 U.S. home fires each year. Lint and other debris can build up in your dryer hose and ventduct, reducing air flow, backing up exhaust gases and eventually creating a fire.

a clogged up dryer vent can also reduce the efficiency of drying and increase the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.  If the drying time is getting longer and longer, and you start to notice a burning smell, have your dryer vent inspected.

We have a dryer vent cleaning special.  We can clean the dryer vent for free when we clean the duct in your house.  So call today to set up an appointment to clean your air duct and dryer vent.
